Yesterdays lunch was a learning experience. It is crazy to think that there are so many different ways to cook rice. I mean seriously, it's all the same basic grain right? But apparently brown rice takes 40 minutes to cook and twice as much water as the white rice I normally cook.

The result was that my stir fry, which incorporated edamame, mushrooms, broccoli, and summer squash, was a little more on the crunchy side then I expected.

I spent most of the afternoon reading a story called The Box by J. David Stevens that was published in the Spring '08 Paris Review and then doing a literary annotation on its use of linking verbs. Amazing that after all these years I am still learning how to use linking verbs in new and exciting ways.

I don't know that my mood has changed at all, I still feel pretty damn surly. I have a friend on SG now, which is pretty sweet.

CORRECTION: I have TWO friends. In the time it took me to post this I doubled my friends on SG. Watch out world, here I come

I had the strangest thing happen the other day and I was reminded of it this morning. I walked past a homeless guy that lives under a bridge that I walk under every morning while out doing some walking mediation. I am not sure, but I think he was masturbating under the blanket that he uses. It was one of those uncomfortable moments of something that is immensely private happening in public and I averted my eyes and picked up my pace to try and extricate myself from the scene as fast as possible. Then, a little later in the same day, I went to a coffee/pastry shop near my apartment and a woman started breast feeding in the middle of the room. Sometimes it is subtle when it happens: a blanket is thrown over the shoulder, covering mama and child and then some nimble movement and the baby feeds then it all happens in reverse. This woman however just whipped it out and started feeding the baby right there. Again I averted my eyes, it was the exact same physical response too.

So I spent about two days trying to figure out how a homeless guy whacking off under a blanket and a woman breast feeding a new born illicit the same gut check for me.

I am reading: The Writing Life by Annie Dillard and The Loss of Leon Meed by Josh Emmons
I am listening to: Au Revoir Simone's The Bird of Music
