I'm fond of my sister's work. "Be Here to Love Me: A film about Townes Van Zandt" was her first feature, and quite good. "Order of Myths" is her second movie, and just about to hit local arthouse theaters in a couple weeks more.

In other artsy goodness, look for anything by Wim Wenders. My favorite by him is "Faraway, So Close." "Wings of Desire" is its prequel, but I liked the sequel more.

Kurosawa is a favorite of the art house set. I enjoy "Yojimbo" as a classic story that's been ripped off countless times. ("For a Fistful of Dollars" is a Yojimbo knock off, amongst others.)

Also, if you liked Amelie, you may like "City of Lost Children" or "Delicatessan" by the same team. So was "Alien, Ressurection" while we're at it. Amelie was the only movie of those four that I enjoyed, but most everyone disagrees with me on that point.

damn, i was going to suggest squid and the whale

i guess my tastes are generally more on the lynch side of the fence (although i get the 'weird for the sake of being weird" thing)

perhaps if you havent seen them already though, these might be good suggestions:

melinda and melinda (one of the better modern woody allens)

Lolo - In a similar style as Amlie except it was filmed in 1992--way before Amlie came out.

American Astronaut - Quite possibly one of the most amazingly weird movies.

There are some clips of both on YouTube.
justsayfaux:
agreed on american astronaut as well.

netflix? whats you username?
baudot:
Yep, that Alien. Actually, I think that's the one film by that crew that everyone can agree sucked.

Can't go wrong with picking up a series. It's like a reeeeally long movie. Six Feet Under was pretty awesome.

I start screening movies again, soon. I'll let you know if I see anything.

Many pix of Oz to come! Just need to organize them, or something...

And the polenta snacky things.. Just lightly coat a pan with some olive oil and pan fry some store bought polenta which you can find at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods quite easily. Then you make this sauce and put it on top of the fried polenta. Voila! Easy as pie. smile

Thanks a lot.. Now you've got me craving polenta. tongue

I don't know why, but I always reccommend Six String Samurai. I only ever saw it once, and I barely remember it, but I do remember liking it a lot.
