Hi Gang! Hopefully this will be the first in an ongoing series of posts where I get back into one of my favorite hobbies; COMICS! As I mentioned recently, I just started a new Full-Time job and I finally have some disposable income that I can invest in my personal passions! To celebrate I ran to my local comic shop and bought a few new (well, new to me at least) collections to reignight my love of illustrated adventures!
Now I have heard a lot about Rat Queens over the last year, espcially from one Vivid Vivka (@vivid) on her Patreon. I have been playing D&D since high school, so a comic that takes a lot of cues from tabletop gaming seemed right up my alley! And, damn, was I right!
For those who aren't familiar with the series, it follows the often violent and bloody exploits of an all-female adventureing group called, what else, the Rat Queens. The troupe consists of a well rounded set of characters with more than a few issues of their own.
Violet; a fierce dawrven warrior with a passion for combat struggling to break away from her family and culture,
Dee; the daughter of a "flying squid god" worshiping cultist looking to find her own answers in the world,
Hannah; a very angry and insanely powerful half-elven mage with more than enough attitude for the entire city,
Betty; an adorable tiny thief with a childlike passion for candy and an no-so-childish love of mushrooms and alcohol
What's great about Rat Queens, aside from the over-the-top yet oddly accurate and often necessary violence, is that all of the characters feel very real. Sure, they can sling spells, swing swords, and a whole host of other fantasy requisites, but they are all clearly defined with their own unique stories, motivations, and fears. They aren't cookie-cutter damsels! In a market that has been saturated with male protagonists it is really a refreshing to see a group of brand new female characters who are given a huge amount of development! I could go on, but that's a whole other post, I think!
Final Verdict; Rat Queens is quickly becoming one of my favorite modern comics! Anyone who plays D&D or just wants to see some bad ass ladies kicking ass should definitely pick this series up!
