Yesterday I was the lucky NHS contestant winning a full lower back Discogram!
This fabulous prize consisted of....
Leisurely journey from Maidstone, Kent to historic Croydon, London via scenic landscapes at 6am
Fun packed parking experience including 'spot the parking space' and 'dodge the traffic warden'
On arrival at the hospital a top of the range wheelchair with glamorous porter was laid on
Meeting and socializing with other lucky prize winners in the 'Cardiac Department'
After changing into a fashionable yet revealing medical robe with numerous stains the real fun began
An huge injection of x-ray dye mixed with antibiotics into various areas of my spinal column
Followed by connection to blood oxygen-monitoring devices, blood pressure cuff and EKG monitoring equipment to record the location of pain and its intensity.
A friendly anesthesiologist to monitor and administer intravenous sedation to counteract black outs caused by pain but to also make sure relative consciousness was achieved at all times
A fantastic total of twelve needles, including a sharp trocar needle to pass through the lumbodorsal fascia and a blunt obturator needle which offered better control when passing through the paravertebral muscles to the posterolateral annulus all inserted into the damaged discs within my back
Bonus 'Double needle' insertion into weeping disc to correctly provoke a pain response!
Constantly being asked 'does that hurt'
All this performed whilst a crowd of medical students and onlookers all dressed in lead suites listened to my screams of pain when the needles penetrated the illusive pain centers !
Unfortunately I did black out towards the end and missed the thrilling experience of another CCG
*** I also received a gift bag that included vomit bags and a 'pain management' leaflet

Sorry I didn't get back to you for ages! been really busy...and still haven't found the time to do another photoset, gah!!!
