photographic goals for the 2009:
1. photograph 3 live music shows every week.
2. complete 365 project.
3. begin memphis drag queen documentary project.
4. photograph the facade and altar of every church/temple/place of worship in the memphis area.
5. produce one book of my photos.
6. have a real gallery show.
7. earn $10,000 from photography alone.
3 shows a week isn't difficult around here, especially with the new minglewood hall music venue. after having success shooting interiors and exteriors for a newer venue in oxford, i'm going to see if i can get some work out of the minglewood folks.
i've always wanted to do a 365 project, and i decided last fall i was going to start one at the beginning of the year. so far i've completed the first week. i can do this!
memphis is the drag queen hub of the midsouth. that probably doesn't say a whole lot, but the scene is big and lively. i have a few friends that are queens, and i have quite a few other ins here and there. i'm still trying to figure out a direction for this project, but i want more than some behind the scenes shots and portraits. i say i want to "begin" this project this year because i think it's going to take me more than a year to complete once i start it.
the church thing came to me while thrift store shopping a couple weeks ago. there are so so so many churches in memphis. i'm guessing there are easily 300 in the greater memphis area alone. i'm going to aim for getting 10 every saturday. this goal is almost like a marathon, and what i'll do with the photos when i'm done i have no idea. but i want to do it just to do it.
i have a few ideas for collections i could put into a book. i'll probably go through lulu or some other self-publishing company for the final product. still working this one out in my head.
hopefully by the last quarter of the year i'll have enough material from all these projects that i can put together a coherent show.
last year i earned roughly $5000 from purely photographic pursuits. i also spent about $10000 on equipment (half of that was my d3, but it has changed my life!). this year i want to double my profits. i don't want to quit my faux finishing job or my singing jobs. i just want to augment my income doing more things that i love.
that pretty much sums it all up. i hope everyone has a beautiful and awesome 2009. everyone's getting prettier and prettier. keep it up, ladies!
