DAILY HOLDEN-O-METER: Holden. . .survived officiating volleyball yet again. He only suffered a few minor gaffes, which is surprising considering that he hasn't officiated volleyball much lately. This time it was mens volleyball, so it wasn't that exciting. (But there was one cute, petite brunette playing on one team, though.) It was a higher level of play--Open and AA.

Holden didn't sleep very well last night. He set his alarm too early and was constantly hitting the snooze. Sound familiar? wink Then, his brother-in-law called and left a couple of messages on his cell phone. It turns out that his flight from Norita, Japan had some mechanical difficulties and was running three hours late. Well, that was three hours too late for Holden, because he had to be to work by 6:45pm. So, he called and left a message on his brother-in-law's cell phone. Lo and behold, he calls Holden back, telling him to unlock the house door. So, Holden drives back and unlocks it, barely making it to work on time.

Oh, well. Sigh.

Shamefully, all that lack of sleep prevented Holden from taking his walk today. He'll have to make up for it tomorrow. But, how can he really?

Have you ever read a 300-page book in one day?

Stay tuned. shocked

Well, if you have read this far, and you're on Holden's friends list (or you remembered to wish Holden a Happy Birthday recently), please step up to the plate and be one of the first five to request your free--absolutely no obligation--Gmail (Google) e-mail account. Holden has five invites to spare.

Should you be one of the first five to request this in Holden's journal. . .that should be obvious enough. . .be sure to drop him an e-mail through SG. . .because he'll be needing it to set you up. wink

My Current Literary Contribution:

Gustavo Adolfo Bcquer, 1836-1871(?)
(born G.A. Domnguez Bastida)

Rima XI
por Gustavo Adolfo Bcquer

Yo soy ardiente, yo soy morena,
yo soy el smbolo de la pasin,
de ansia de goces mi alma est llena.
A m me buscas?
No es a ti, no.

Mi frente es plida, mis trenzas de oro:
puedo brindarte dichas sin fin,
yo de ternura guardo un tesoro.
A m me llamas?
No, no es a ti.

Yo soy un sueo, un imposible,
vano fantasma de niebla y luz;
soy incorprea, soy intangible:
no puedo amarte.
Oh ven, ven t!

"Holden's Translation" (Please be aware that literary translation takes many years of study. Since I couldn't find a translation on the Internet, this will have to do for now):

Rhyme XI
by Gustavo Adolfo Bcquer

I am burning, I am brunette,
I am the symbol of passion,
My soul is full of anxious yearning.
Do you seek me?
No, not you.

My face is fair; by braids, of gold:
I can give you endless riches,
From my tenderness I guard a treasure.
Are you calling me?
No, not you.

I am a dream, an impossibility,
vain ghost of fog and light;
I am incorporal, I am intangible:
I cannot love you.
Oh, come, please come!

i haven't been living in the wilderness, although that might have been preferable alternative. a bit of survival is probably just what i've been needing biggrin

no, i've described this year as my wilderness year--- my dark night of the soul, although that's over-dramatising things a fair bit tongue

as it happens, i've grown up in the countryside beside a small town too: small town syndrome's been driving me nuts. the great escape comes on Monday, but actually I shouldn't have much moving to do--- Belfast isn't that far from home (and its a university owned postgraduate flat), and apart from clothes, CDs and books, there shouldn't be an awful lot more to shift.

i live pretty lightly.

for the moment anyway. wink

A lot of what I belived about California when I lived in Michigan has not been true. It's been harder to find organic produce and such here. Ralphs, the same chain as Kroger with a different name, only started stocking organic groceries in the last couple of years. They've only recently got hip to soy milk and such and offer a variety. They don't stock After the Fall juices or a lot of that other stuff that is sort of Whole Foods-ish that you can buy at Kroger.

Politically, California isn't nearly as liberal as you might think. The cost of living out here is so expensive, that a lot of those top 1% of income earners live here. They have a lot of clout. San Francisco is much more liberal than LA. I think the biggest shock was how dirty LA is. Cities usually aren't clean, and it's always a shock to see they aren't like you see on TV. When I had to travel to Dallas for work a long time ago I was also shocked by how dirty it was.

Radio wise, LA radio sucks. Really. There's nothing like WDET out here. There's a jazz station that's kind of like WEMU, but they don't do NPR, it's all blues and jazz. They're a really good station. The big public radio station KCRW does a little bit of music, but it's almost all news programming and a lot of it is stuff they create to sell nationally. There's a really good one on every day from 1-2 my time called "To the Point." It's like what Nightline was like 20 years ago when it was really good. Anyway, there's not a lot of good music stations on the radio out here.

We have amazing museums and culturally this place is just crazy. It's all here if you've got the money to do it. That's one of the reasons I can't leave. That and the weather!

I wish I spoke Spanish.
