Well.... having had mega problems with both of my mac towers over the last five years.... I know that CompUSA will transfer data from one drive to another for $75. I would assume that they would transfer the data to CDs or DVDs instead, or an external drive, if preferred.
RE: macs: I love them but they have their own problems that tend to be exorbitantly more expensive to fix than PCs. Don't be super eager to switch- definitely research. My next machine will probably actually be a PC because I'm a web designer AND developer and a lot of the development software only works on PC or works much better on PC. Even a lot of design software is starting to lean that way. And the new version of X is very buggy and not very stable.
Ewww, Mac. I considered one for a while, but I've come to the conclusion that I just don't like them. Were you running Windows? If so, you may wanna look into Linux, which I hear is a billion times more stable.
That said, as a film major, I'm surprised you don't already have a Mac or two, as most of the schweet film editing (etc.) software is for a Mac.
Macs are somewhat incompatible, but I think I'd rather have a computer that doesn't fart out on me every month or two. I've reformatted my PC four times already, I've reformatted my Macs... never. Unless you want hardcore gaming, go for the Mac dude.
