i hear you, and it sounds like you know when to stop before it hurts someone. i joke about being fat all the time and being dumb, pisses my friends off but its a defensive thing for me to do before someone else does it to me. anyway keep your chin up and your head down and dodge all the pies flying at ya!
It's just normal human behaviour... We use humor to defend ourselves, get over stuff, handle pain, it's normal and not heartless, don't let anyone tell you that... Besides, I think it was a Spanish author called Alfredo Landa who said: "Sense of humor consists in knowing how to laugh at ones own tragedies"...
Be yourself, you're by no means heartless or insensitive... you're a lovely woman who takes into notice some might hurt at her words and considers it... That's being the bigger person...

By the way, you sound a lot like me. People tend to take what i say way to seriously, and sometimes i wonder if they just have no sense of humor or if i'm insensitive. :/ I'm not sure if i have something that i hold sacred.... *ponders*....... i think racism. yeah. I think that's it.
Humor is the sword people impale themselves upon almost daily. I got stabbed by it last week over a racial issue. A friend just lost a lover because she said "he can't take a joke" (about homosexuality). So it's damn touchy.
Point is, funny is not the same thing to all people. However, understanding is universal. Be ready to show one when the other fails...
