So, I have gotten an extension on my thesis. I have another quarter to finish it. I have roughly about 15 pages written. Woo Hoo, only 45 more to go. I am not worried about the amount. I have plenty of material to use and it is going to be a chore to kind of make it all come together. So, quite of few of you have asked me what my thesis is all about . We, be warned that my explanation is going to be a long one, so if you want to skip that part, just go on to part B.
A.
Since 1993, over 400 young female factory workers in the border town of Juarez, Mexico have dissapeared or have been brutally murdered. These women had been raped , tortured, strangeled, cut to pieces (a lot of the bodies were missing nipples and breasts) and in one extreme instance one was thrown into a vat of acid in which the only identifiable means of getting her identity was through the serial number of her breast implants. The point is that horrific violence was suffered and even though over 57 people have been arrested, the murders still keep happening. My theory is that due to neo-liberal policies such as NAFTA and the Border Industrialization Project as well as other economic factors in the Mexican economy coupled with the city of Juarez that in itself has a long standing history of crime and violence, has become the perfect location for something like this to happen. So, it is through certain economic factors where as the central and rural areas of farming communities were most negatively affected, caused a huge wave of migration to the border of Mexico where cheap jobs in the factories offered to some degree economic independance to young women. However, men were being dissenfranchiesed where they could not get work in the facotries. Becuase of the socialized submissivce nature of the female gender, they have been seen as a plus to the facotries. Given the gender and cultural dynamics of male and female relationships in Mexico, new sets of freedoms afforded by economic independence has disturbed the social dynamic fabric of the relations between males and females, thus destabalizing the shared meaning of gender. This in turn has had dire consequences for females. I see the deaths of these women as a sort of symptom of a social disruption of gender roles. ANYWAY- it is something I have been working on for over 3 years and have even written a 30 page paper about it in 2003.
