Thanks - it's the first time I had to have an EKG and literally my heart was in my throat the whole time.

For some reason when I write shorter lyric type poems my lines get shorter - aesthetically, I guess I prefer a short poem that kind of stretches down the page rather than be stuffed up into the corner of the page. I've written longer more narrative type poems and the lines seem to lengthen.

I definitely focus on line breaks - Stephen Dunn says to watch out for lines that are much shorter or longer than the rest of the poem and I try to do that. Theodore Roethke taught his students to analyze the first word of each line - if all of the lines in a poem start with of, the, and, but or some other uninteresting words, then maybe the line breaks should be revisited. I definitely try to use Roethke's rule if for no other reason than it forces me to focus on the breaks.
