Gah. I know that all too well. I'm an English major trying to write. I feel like copyrights and portfolios and all that crap chokes the life out of my work. But, Penn State is a really good school, being published through them is something to be proud of. I would be.
I just write, everyday. Anything, poetry, short stories, songs. Unfortunately, I haven't really found my niche as far as marketability. I had a literary agent but it just didn't work. The last two things I had published were in UCSB's journal, which sounds a lot like Penn State's and a poem published in a textbook used at Cornell.
I'm not planning on quitting my day job anytime soon.
I'm rather enraptured by poets. My biggest fault as a writer is wordiness so the ability to convey an emotion in few words is something I admire. I just got a really cool book of Haiku compiled by R.H. Blythe in the '50s. I used to write haiku off but now it's my new obsession.
What kind of poetry do you write? Free form? Iambic pentameter? Confessional? I'd like to read some if you having any floating around the intrawebz.
I force my writing down people's throats & beg for theirs. Yes, I think I am becoming obsessed. I can almost understand why so many artists go bananas.
i've heard only good things about american university. i had friends there in the late 90's who loved it & went on to do great things because of it.
if you're serious about writing, you might want to consider The New School in Manhattan. that's where i'm heading after i finish my undergrad work. they offer a masters in creative writing. their faculty is comprised of working writers, publishers, editors - you name it - from nyc. so, depending on where you'd like to be down the road - it could be a great place to meet people in the writing world, as well as do your grad work. Iowa City's another great one, particularly for poets, but i'd say it's more on the pretentious-asshole end of writing. i didn't write for a long time after being in that environment, but it did help a friend of mine get the Pushcart prize.
hey... would you consider sharing some/all of what you won for? hmmm??? to win two yrs in a row is saying something! i'd love to read your work.
hope the allergies let up
in all seriousness....youd be surprised....i have my own case of OCD, and im a fucking slob.
my mom always says she hopes i marry some girl who is a neatfreak so she can, "take care of me." i told her its not going to happen. i WONT live with a neatfreak.
then a while back i was talking to someone and describing to them my music collection on my computer. its organized in a very uniform way. for instance. the beatles are listed as
Beatles, the - Hey Jude
like so. any "the" band is like that. or with a guy like....
Cash, Johnny - Folsom Prison Blues
ya see? all of it like this. THAT is also OCD.
you might not be like that. but the numbering/list thing just made me think of that. it was mostly a playful jib....but maybe.....
with me, its really only that one thing. im too laid back to be controlling about anything, thats really waht it comes down to with OCD. my attitude (which is mostly "fuck it") kinda negates that. *L*
damn me and my memory.....there was something i was going to ask you the other night before you got off AIM...and now i cant remember.
10. Congratulations.
9. Well hope you are feeling better by now. I know how allergies can be a pain.
8. I'm allergic to cat fleas. The bites make me come out in itchy sores.
7. Let's hope Thursday was indeed specials then.
6. I'm sure you'll look fabulous in it too.
5. You never know eh? Might be the start of a whole new fashion trend for you.
4. May I suggest buying on then, lol
3. See what I can do for you, you may need to move country though.
2. Pass on that one.
1. Well...what did happen then?
