Very insightful......it's a shame I don't usually go to clubs to observe this more....but I do see what you mean.
tartpop:
Stretcharmstong, thursday, story of the year, norma jean, evergreen terrace, and saves the day have never been classified by anyone as punk bands.

stretch, norma jean and evergreen terrace are hardcore bands. thursday, story of the year, and saves day the day are scremo/emo whatever.

why struggle so hard to be different for the sake of being different? isn't of trying to be so different from the crowd, why not just try to be yourself and if it coincides with the crowd the it coincides, and if it's completely against then it's against. regaurdless, neither clothes nor music define who you are.
delilahb:
Hey! I watch the OC! but think none of those bands are punk...well...except maybe The Donnas wink
delilahb:
PS. I feel the same way about emmulating style. At times I feel like I don't fit in (especially when I'm at punk bars), but then I'm like "fuck you! If you don't like me because I don't dress like you, than fuck off. I like my style."
sushi:
This is not criticism, merely curiosity... because I agree for the most part with your sentiments, but do you consider yourself "punk"? Either way, it's always been a humorous thing to me that no cool kid thinks any other cool kids are the real cool kids.

I'm definitely not punk. Never have been. Never even tried to be. Indie is something I would have to think about. I'm certainly not a "scene" kid. But I think I would be forced to call myself a hipster for the sole reason that I dislike being called one. But all the labels and costumes have never really bothered me. I've never really seen it as people trying to express their individuality so much as them trying to be identified. You've got your tight jeans and 80's ringer on... and you see the girl across the room with her tight jeans and 80's ringer on and you've got a least a fragment of an indication that you will get along. Besides... the more current indie kid look is the urban cowboy. The problem arises when the mainstream decides to mass-market the image of the minute. But it's a temporary problem. Whoever the ultra-secret-waaay-cooler-than-you underground trendsetters are.... they come up with something spiffy and the cylcle starts anew. I suppose what you're asking is for everyone to take up arms and become their own trendsetter? Which is cool. But incredibly difficult. I tried it back when I was in highschool. I was actually voted most fashionable and it was furthermore presumed that I was homosexual. hehe... Guess who got most unique? A guy with a fucking mohawk. Mohawk? unique?!? Maybe thirty years ago. I wasn't that bitter though cause the guy was nice and would attack the jocks that called me a fag. He called himself punk. Until I made him watch SLC Punk and he became completely disillusioned with himself. Anyway... I'm rambling. I'm sorry for writing these enormous, pointless comments in your diary. I'm so lonely frown

Oh yeah... I forgot what I wanted to say. It was this: Once all the cool kids start making their own styles, I've got a nagging suspicion that this will become it's own culture. A whole new image to be copied and categorized. They'll call themselves "creators" or "uniquies" or something and as soon as it's pumped into the tvs of suburbian america every kid will look just like every other uniquie.
pinkily:
Interesting journal entry. Kept me reading, and actually paying attention. smile

A few funny notes--I tried some "different" styles back when I was in school--I look back now and go "What the hell was I thinking?"

I like all kinds of stuff. A friend and I were talking the other day about my ecclectic tastes. I like rock, I like rap, I love R&B, I love old country, I love new country, I like random stuff that I can't think of names for.

Did ya see any "Nashville Star" this year?? Matt (who's last name escapes me right now) that played the washboard and wore overalls was my absolute FAVORITE! If that guy had a concert, I'd go. Fer rizzle.
dclxvi:
Wow - you went on a rant - but i have to agree with the bands not being punk - lame ass mo fo's.
peggy:
Just stopping in to say "hi". biggrin
ninadelamorte:
But you've forgotten all about originality in your efforts to be original.

I like that line best of all even if it's not to original tongue . I believe the statement, "there is nothing new under the sun" comes to mind most after reading that. I loved the post!
peggy:
Yes people are. I just need to realize not all of them are like that.
