Well I'm sitting in an internet cafe/afterhours hangout spot on this German post in Afghanistan. There are a few different countries' armed forces here and that's a little interesting. One gets to see another country's culture through a soldier representing his or her country. Other than that, it's pretty much the same here day to day.
I will say though that staying on a base for a year is completely different from my time in Iraq. That time, I was on base rarely, spending 95% of my time living out in the city, surrounded by a different culture and language. All at 19 years old. That was also....interesting....but I couldn't describe how strange it was. I wouldn't even know where to start.
I still find it odd every time I find myself thinking about last deployment and wishing I was there again...but then again, I wish I could be in a lot of places other than here. I'll get the chance, of course. I don't consider myself imprisoned in the country like many do. I consider myself on 'forced vacation', really, and that after this one I''ll get the chance to do much that I want. I've always wanted to see St. Petersburg and Paris, and many other places. The list of things to do becomes pages longer every day and the possibilities increase almost as fast.
The only problem is, I'm simply not sure where to start. I think I'll go with my standard approach: jump in and see what happens.
