First of all, I have to say it:

RIP Proof. You were an amazing, down to earth example of the good that comes out of this city.

Fuck everyone that says that this is just proof that hip hop kills, or proof that guns kill. This is proof that we live in a messed up world. This is proof that we blame things that are our own fault on others. This is proof that the world is not a good place. This is proof...This is Proof. This just goes to show that the world is far from perfect; that a good decent person can get shot, and yet I wander around Detroit in the dark and no one even looks twice.
I walked around Detroit tonight. Not the suburbs. Detroit. I walked past the old train station. I walked past dozens of GORGEOUS abandoned houses. All I could think...
We live in such a disposable, greedy culture. We want so much for so little. We want so little for so much. We lack an understanding and therefore do not find the value in our history. We don't find value in historical buildings. We don't find value in life.
Alas, most of us spend our days; our lives slaving for an impossible dream.
What are we going to do when our lives are gone? When are we going to realize... our hopes lie with meaningful connections to others? Our dreams lie within ourselves, and a sense of accomplishment? Our roots lie in our history, the monuments we have built that tell us where we came from?
The problem is, we are so disposable that we throw away all that tells us where we came from. After all that reminds us is gone, we wander through life despondent without any idea where we came from, and then complain about our lack of culture.
We kill our own cultue, our own history, our own blood. If we don't murder it, we abandon it. We toss it to the side because we are focused forward, rather than looking at the big picture.
In short, we have tunnel vision. We are so focused on our greed that we can't value intangible things. Our mixed up focus leads us to the unthinkable. I could never, ever, even dream of taking someone else's life.
So why do we? With neglect, or maliciousness, or even hatred, we promote the violence that happened today.
Now, I'm not saying get rid of guns. I rather like the thought of guns. I'm sort of comforted by them. I'm not saying we need to change our economic methods. I'm saying people first, things second. I'm saying that maybe... just maybe... if we changed our focus, we could change the violence.
Yeah, idealism 101. I know.
