I do not like this phrase at all, but I do use it and end up being a hypocrite. I dislike it because it infers we should be ashamed of something we like which is total bullshit, you like what you like. I usually use it when referring to a band I think I shouldn't enjoy as much as I do. I usually call Breaking Benjamin and Linkin Park my guilty pleasures because I really enjoy their music as much as bands that have heavily influenced my life. I don't know what it is but they are really good to me, I usually don't put weight on most "main stream" music (music snob I know, even though a lot of bands I like are probably on some radio station). Linkin is great live I found out at KROQ's Weenie Roast some odd years ago and Breaking B's singer has a voice I love. Random thoughts.
