More dangerous than Martial Arts....
=MountainBiking!!!
Have you ever been interested in any other forms of Martial Arts? I was interested in Shoalin Kung-Fu for a while, there was a school in Red Deer when I lived there. There is also a Samuri School here in the city, it would complement Shoto-kan very well.
I can't train until after I have surgery, but I've been wanting to get back into it again for a while now. I might still know some of the people at the clubs too. If I started today I think it might take me about a year before I was ready for my 1st kyu. Time off is the hardest thing to recover from.
The thing that always interested me about Shoalin Kung-Fu was the internal part. Energy meridians, reflexology and spiritual development. Shoto-kan is very scientific, albeit very powerful, "one strike, one kill", but I always felt it was missing something.
God, thunderstorms turn me on tremendously. I would love to be up in Alberta under your covers with the rain pounding at your bedroom window and the thunder clapping outside. Unfortunately I'm down in LA where we only have sunshine. Sunshine and long work hours.
I hope to talk to you later tonight. Save a space for me under your covers.
Definately Jujitsu, which is the grappling equivelant to Shotokan. My friend who started Karate at the same time as me took it for a while, I was interested in it. Everyone always goes on about grappling vs. stand up fighting, and of course they always cite the Gracies as the supreme example. You only needed to see Sakuraba beating the pants off the Gracies to see that a good stand up fighter doesn't need to round out his training with grappling. Not that Sakuraba isn't an excellent grappler.
Of course the real problem with either is that old saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none". Both martial arts are a lifelong commitment.
The Okinawans developed Shotokan to 'kill' their armed enemies, and I've heard a few stories to convince me of it's brutal effectivness.
I just received your email... and my word, am I ever distracted from completeing work. I just may need to sneek off to the supply closet to *ahem* "regroup". You have quite the gift for writing. It's only fair that I pen something for you in return. I have to be a little sly at work though my computer is full view of my boss. Personal correspondence is frowned upon. But trust me, I very much look forward to the creative process.
