I think it's absolutely possible for an "arch" conservative to be a rational person, just unlikely. I find that usually people who think about their political beliefs can come up with a logical reason for supporting them. It's just that (in general) our values are different than theirs. Of course, that's not to say there aren't psychotic Ayn Rand and Protocols of the Elders of Zion fuckers out there, but I haven't encountered too many of those people in real life. Just on the internets.
