into the wild was good... but he went alone for the most part. he did meet up with some people in the process... the old man bit made me sad....but i think you should read kerouac... even though what you talk about seems more like missionary work.
whatever you do... make sure to take your uke... and write songs about it..
I would definitely make time to travel while you can. As a parent, I no longer have the ability to just get away from my life and responsibilities, but getting away and just meeting people and creating relationships is the most rewarding feeling in the world.

it's always such a difficult balance between life in one place and travel around... i never know how to make that choice...
I've already been, the trip was great and I highly recommend it. The place is so chilled. I tried some of the local treats, and as a result don't remember as much as I should ;0)

Traveling has always appealed to me too. I think I'm too "soft" for the kind you're wanting, though. You are right, it would help you to truly understand life after you are able to "live in another's shoes" so to speak. Good luck!
