For me last Friday was of those days I'll never be able to plan for or recreate, I just had to sit there and appreciate that it was one of the good ones.

I was having a cider-breakfast with a uni mate who's helping me work on my comic when I received this text message from one of my best mates:

hey what r u doing in an hr? Im gona go sketch people waiting in line at krispy kreme, wanna tag along and sketch the too?

A Krispy Kreme donut shop opened in this city a few weeks ago, and the population's gone a bit nuts for it. In the first week the line would stretch out the door and around the block. So my friend had gone at about 10 that morning thinking that the novelty would have worn off and it'd be a quiet enough time of day, only to find that the line was still massive. She then decided that this had to be creatively documented.

So we spent from about four hours outside Krispy Kreme drawing as the line varied from just inside the door to around the block. At one stage a fairly well dressed man approached us and just said "some free donuts for the budding artists?" and came back with six pack of mixed donuts. Turns out he was the marketing manager for that Krispy Kreme and was interested in displaying some local art there. Until of course he realised most of what we were drawing involved people being bent over and donut-holed by consumerism.

Mr Marketing: "I'd like to do a cartoon of each of the different flavours as different characters."
Drawing mate: "Like the cream filled one could be the gay one?"
Mr Marketing: "That'd get me in all sorts of trouble..."

Really nice guy though, and he very much had a sense of humor for what we were doing. The fact that we got the donuts for free far outweighed not having to wait in line or leave our spot for food. I wanted to try some just to satisfy my curiosity really. There's a donut stall at a music festival I go to every year that makes organic donuts. So organic ingredients plus the weird sensation that everything tastes better when you're camping pretty much makes these donuts fucking incredible, and since Krispy Kreme had drawn such a crowd I wanted to compare them. Byron Bay Organic Donuts > Krispy Kreme.

Afterwards we went back to my mate's temp apartment which is a good thirty levels high, where we were joined by some other drinking buddies. We downed a six pack of our poison of choice and watched the sun set on Brisbane City.

rizzo:
hahaha that's awesome! too bad krispy kreme donuts really aren't all that good...
