I am so frigging spoiled when it comes to beaches. Thanks to my grandfather's living in the US Virgin Islands, vacations of my youth were partly spent on nearly empty Caribbean beaches. Somehow, after that, the prospect of sharing the syringe-covered sand with hundreds of embittered New Yorkers while the wafting stench of summer sewage begins its olefactory mambo somehow lost its appeal. But, don't worry, I think it's fine for you! And the postcard images clearly don't suck.
Speak softly? Carrying a big stick? Ummm, are you hitting on me *again*?
I don't think that I could rightly complain about anything that happened to me today when I consider the escalating troubles in the Middle East. I have my opinions, of course, but, above all, I feel deep disappointment in how we humans don't seem to be improving nearly as quickly in the rationality sector as I would hope.
I went to Coney island once...
i went on that really old rollercoaster they had, and my neck hurt for weeks!
as for jellyfish, they scare the hell out of me!
i remember being in Fla. and they were all over the beach (on the sand)
and all the adults kept telling me to be careful not to step on them or they would
sting me...
thanks for the science lesson
now... i just don't like wrapping my head around this communal idea of a Man-o-War. maybe i heard this another time, but i promptly forgot it because it bothers my mind. how do all those creatures get together and by what process do they form the various parts? that just boggles me. kind of like the opposite of a grove of aspen trees.
My first introduction to Coney Island was in one of my favorite movies "The Warriors"! That opening scene with the Wonder Wheel is emblazoned in my mind, and last year for the first time I got to visit it in person! Sadly it was April and everything was pretty much closed, so my dream of riding the Wonder Wheel was foiled, but I'll try again some day. I hope they don't revitalize the charm right out of the place, I too am a fan of gritty.
It was actually kind of cool seeing it with no crowds. Love the postcards! Did you know there is a Luna Park in Sydney Australia also?
Seriously, if I come to NY in the summer some time, you'll show me your secret spot, right?
Jellyfish are cool, but I think I'm with Pastura on the man-o-war!
Hey I was re-reading your post. Is Coney Island getting redeveloped? I would love to go there to check it out but I never think of it. You're saying it's a kicking good time, yes?
Johnny Weissmuller was an incredible swimmer and my personal aquatic hero.
In brief he: won five Olympic Golds and one Bronze, never lost a race as an amateur, and set 67 (yeah, 67) world records in different swimming events. Not to mention the fact that he was Tarzan, The Ape Man.
Yeah, and when you get stung by a MOW you gotta pee on the wound.
We don't have those in VT though.
Yeah, Coney Island is being redeveloped.
It's one of the last bastions of real NYC.
Thank goodness they're going to clean it up for the tourists and all those new NYers who don't like icky things.
Thank goodness I'll be gone before that happens.
see, i thought everyone knew what the ceremony was all about because i posted something on it not long ago and lots of folks commented. yes, we're getting "married" but, i'm like you, i have lots of hang-ups on the whole institution. our ceremony isn't even remotely traditional and, in fact, some of our older guests might be wondering what the hell they just saw, but i'm excited about it and we're both going into this without expecting everything to change afterwards. we love each other now and we like our lives together, we're basically just telling everyone why in public.
yeah, i know, Nature rocks my socks off.
and spanking, well, i can keep a straight face when i dole them out, but i crack up when i get them. it just seems so awkward, at least for my partner to do. no naughty questions, just some very obvious "okay, i'm going to try and do this right now... gotta make sure i don't hurt her...." he he. he's sweet, just a little shy about rough play.
