my grandfathers brothers were in the 449 in WW2. it was the Japanese-American unit. The most highly decored unit. My grandfather didnt go though, stayed home and took care of his mom. Really afftected his life (no GI bill for him).
I had a friend in the Coast Guard (she called it the pussy branch of the military). I visited her once in Hawaii and hung out with her friends, was really my only exposure to the service. She had to quit so she could marry an enlisted man. She always said the military was a big socialist experiment.
