That is pretty stunning stuff. I can't imagine tossing an entire draft. I've bailed on an idea before, but never started over with the same premise. I just got a chill.
I can completely sympathize with delete-the-old-draft approach. I know if I dont get it 80% right in the first draft, odds are the whole thing will get conspicuously worse with each subsequent draft. You loose objectivity and originality. It becomes pretty stale, pretty fast.
dude - its looking more likely that i'll come with every moment. i might have a friend or 2 come with though.
whats the scene going to be like - how many people are expected? when are you going?
We should all aspire to one day have the kind of day that's one of his routine ones. He sounds cool as well as both gifted and driven. Gotta love that... and thanks for the kind words in seether's thread...
Sounds like a plan (catching up when you get back)... I missed Lost In Translation so far (the plan was to see it, but through a bizarre set of circumstances involving a date that never went down, I managed to miss it completely)... Regardless I've heard nothing but wonderful things and think it's fantastic Sofia got her due. And that Bill Murray finally got some recognition is just amazing and fantastic and long overdue... genius.
Hey man, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Been crazy. I've been offered my first feature directing job! So I am getting the details on that and deciding whether I will take it, etc.
intersting is an understatement. they are fantastic pieces of art. too bad work got the best of you. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be played again in cinema.
It's always interesting to find out how people work with writing partners. There are't too many books out on the subject. My writing partner and I approach it like studio animators, outlining the overall scenes and assigning characters. Depending on which character dominates the scene, that's who writes (e.g. I'm assigned the character of Lucy, He's got George. The scene is about Lucy = I write the first draft). Then we both go over it, back and forth, sometimes completely rewriting. I completely understand your partner getting rid of something entirely when it just isn't working right. Sometimes, even sketching out a comic page, you've got to start fresh in order to get what it is you're going for.
no dude - you didnt take it the right way [sigh]
its like i was so into chatting with fg [thats french-girl] that i ignored everyone even you ;-)
i wasnt very social..
anyway, thats all i have to say. i left my bt adapter at the office so i cant get you that pic tonight. i will do so later.
thanks for the invite - i had a great time. a really great time.
you know - a fun time. plus i ate lots of brownies and chatted with interesting folks. mostly 2 folks.
Bastard! I completely forgot about R. It mustve been him. Im also a bit of a germaphobe (sp?). Most people in L.A. are, which strangely enough does make you feel so strange. I know Im rambling. I popped some pills and feel better already. No need or desire to get sick.
I dont wanna sound like an ass, but I was pretty surprised to see that many pretty girls pretty and social girls to be exact. Thanks again for the invite. I, too, had a great time. You got a bunch of really cool friends.
Yeah, I have no problem self-editing usually, to get to the god stuff. I tend to write a lot just to work out my thoughts on things. But man, I can't believe your partner deletes stuff. I cannot tell you how many times I've written something, and then a year later, while working on something else entirely, think: Hey, remember that character from "blah! The movie", we wrote? And I go dig that up for re-use in a new story.
rock on dude. yeah - i'll keep my eyes peeled for academy action. in the meantime i'm going to hook up with the french and the boxer this week for drinks.
if i can get away from work that is..
have fun on your trup. i will send the pic tonight.
