Uhm since when?

So! With the approval of the house I am in need of some new furniture, woohoooo! I am super looking forward to upgrading a bit, with a new bedroom set especially! Have lots of other things to buy of course to help fulfill my living room, dining room and other areas too. Anywho, of course I’ve been shopping around a bit to get some ideas and investigate what style I’m interested in yada yada all that fancy stuff. So here’s my question:

Since when are couches so fuckin expensive? 😅 Like, don’t get me wrong. I obviously knew furniture is not cheap, unless you want ‘cheap’. But holy shit man you stroll into a place and the average price of even their low grade selection is like $1600. You outta your mind lol. For something high quality maybe but damn there is a lot of stiff ass uncomfortable couches floatin around out there for a steep price. So a couch, will be a mission.

Then of course you think buying a dining room table is simple, right? General color in mind, size preference to fit room, cool. Nope, just kidding since when is it so hard to pick a damn table that fits everything you need but isn’t like $400?? Maybe I’ll go back to the uuuusssed options like before 😂 I’ll be patient I’ll be patient. I’ll keep shopping around, it hasn’t been long. Just didn’t realize this shit was such a process! Black, medium sized rectangular table. Boom. Nope. Why the fuck is everything brown?? Since when does everyone want brown and beige !?! Boring. There’s other neutral colors you know!

On top of it all I’m trying to minimize my space and get more shelving for organization rather then dressers and clutter in other parts of the house. Dope! Organizational shit actually isn’t too bad. Until you add it up and the whole closet system you’d like is $500 like phew you know I may as well just build my own walk in closet if that’s the case. Hahaha.

Ahhh I’m just so used to fumbling around with whatever works and whatever I could find. Ive lived on my own since I was 17 years old but I’ve never had a house that was officially mine, obviously. Or somewhere I knew I was at least going to be spending an adequate amount of time living and could actually invest in nicer belongings and furniture. I’ve never been one to really care much about that stuff, I’ll easily get a table for $20 and pick up hand me down furniture from family, friends etc. BUT now that I’m a bit older, no family here in Arizona, and settling down somewhere much nicer than what I’ve lived in before... I’m ready to actually invest in what I own and have a more selective and ‘grown up’ approach to my decor and furnishing. It’ll be a lot of work, it already is, but I’m so so so excited for all of it and to feel more comfortable in my space and move on from a few things. (:

Can’t wait to show you how I decorate my new place! I’ll be painting my walls, creating a separate room for my Batman collection.. it’s all guna be a whole lot of new and interesting little tasks that I’m ecstatic to start & share with you 😋💚

What are some things you didn’t realize were so damn expensive or difficult to accumulate when first purchasing a home or being on your own? You really don’t think about how all the little things add up either!

Now my response as an architect who helps clients with these purchases all the time: It's really difficult to do a whole house at once for several reasons.  Most people who try wind up replacing a lot of stuff later - I've seen that over and over again.  We occupy each space a bit differently, so if you can restrain the natural enthusiasm it pays to live in the space a bit, adding pieces as you find them.  If you've got the budget set aside and some placeholders, you're in a great position: you can wait until you find a couch (table, dresser, etc) that you love.  Used furniture can be a great option because shit furniture doesn't usually last long enough to reach a second or third owner, and when you shop used you're more likely to get something unique.  Couches... I feel for ya.  They're just expensive.  Lots of material with lots of craft going into each one.

You do pay for quality, and the sticker shock of quality is understandable when our expectations are set by items that are just a step up from disposable.  $400 for a table is very reasonable when you think of all the material and craft that goes in, and how much use you'll get out of a good one.  You could have that sucker for 20 years or more, so amortize out 1K... you'd happily pay $4/month for a good table, and there's also benefit in having it settled - off your plate to think about.  Clients are often surprised when I urge them to not discount Ikea - there's a lot of cheap junk there, but also a lot of fantastic value if you know what to look for.  Their dining tables are particularly impressive cost/quality.  I wouldn't get a dresser or bed there, though.  I hope you can avoid the stress of it all enough to enjoy this big new transition!  If it stops being fun, try to ease off the gas.
