So, I've been struggling with my decision about whether to go or not to Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago. I've been going for about 11 years now and have seen it change over the years from a small event with a few booths, to a larger event with poor planning, to a super awesome event taking up a gigantic portion of the Stevens Center, very well organized and laid out with multiple platforms of interaction with both artists and guests. Now, unfortunately, in the past 2 years it has lost a lot of luster and fallen on hard times again since the big production houses no longer attend and the prices for autographs and pictures and such have gone through the roof! I know it's all part of the game we geeks play with event coordinators and the industry, but it kinda pisses me off that it feels more and more like they are price gouging $50 to $100 for the same signature that cost $20 just a few years ago.
I guess I'm giving this whole thing another shot for a few reasons. First is that my dad is a gigantic Star Trek Next Generation fan, and Sir Patrick Stewart is really attending this year. I had purchased tickets for the Shatner-Stewart event last year, only to get bummed out when Stewart had to drop out. Shatner was still amazing to see, but this year, the Captains chair it filled and I'm taking my Dad to meet his Captain of the Enterprise. Second, A lot of y comic geek friends have been getting excited for this even this yea cuz they have been hearing mumblings about how it is going to be better all around, the reduced prices and better seating options already prove this.
In the end, I'm pretty happy about my decision to go again this year, since it is my yearly pilgrimage (even though I live in Chicago) to a geek event where I can mingle with my people, find the comics I need to complete my various collections, find cool shirts or one off artwork and just feel good about being a comic book geek. Plus, another trip to the SSG booth to hang out with all the girls in real life that I see every day on the web...how could I pass that up?!?! So, who's gonna be there working the booth and what area number are you at?? Last year it was Radeo, Tita, Rizzo, Kraven, Caprica and Rosaliign (sp?) . They were a freakin BLAST to meet and hang out with and probably the most inspiring reason as to why I joined this sit. They took the time to talk to you, sign the stuff you purchased if you asked and were just super down to earth. It was totally awesome to see how the guys clustered around and became mumbling fools in front of them all!
So, if you are going, I'll see you there! If you aren't, I will report back as to if this was a good decision or not. And, as always, I'll upload my pics to share, though I still have yet to get the done from last year, ha!
Later SG-philes!
