I actually drove out to SF and Berkeley to retrace their steps, and while in Boston, caught a train out to Lowell and wandered through the streets for an afternoon, saw Jack's grave, etc. ...way overboard. ...nice adventures, though.

From what I can tell it was on purpose, he said the guy cried when he saw what was left of the cat and talked about taking it into some room and about it yelling. It sound to me like he is a sick fuck, I wish some one would have turned him into the cops.
