I agree with you--I wonder how Ursula K LeGuin would respond to your ideas. I do like her presentation of the idea that a lot of science fiction IS really a framework, or rather a lens, through which to look at our own society. From the limited amount of science fiction I've read, I've found this to be very applicable--I'm thinking of certain elements in William Gibson novels, Bruce Sterling short stories, the Dune series..hell, Cowboy Bebop, even. But there IS also that element of pure fancy and invention that I think adds the creative touches to these stories, the pure imagination which in time often becomes reality, and I don't think these are so much predictive of the future as *shaping* the future. I mean the ideas posed "on the fringes," in fora such as science fiction, or in the past by "radical" thinkers such as Leonardo Da Vinci, introduces these ideas into the human consciousness and propels us to create them. Does that make sense? Oh well, anyway.
