Are great authors a rarity these days?

Since I was a young child I have always spent a lot of my spare time reading books, I adore reading. I always manage to get lost in a world of imagination, picturing it all exactly how I see it from the words and getting attached to the characters and feeling what they feel. I have always been a reader of the classics e.g Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Les Miserables, The Sherlock Holmes Collection and many more, but what I have found recently is that when I try to read a newer book, I just cant get into them! Is there a lack of great authors these days? Or am I just missing the good books?! I mean look at the first lines of a selection of my favourite books, I think they are just fantastic.....

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (1813)

'All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy (1878)

"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticising any one, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925)

"There was no possibility of taking a walk that day." Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë(1847)

In my opinion, the 4 books I just quoted, are 4 of the best ever written! What books do you guys like? Could you give me any pointers on newer authors that are 'great'?

Hope you are all having a fantastic day! Much Love <3

I guess perhaps you are looking at books in a wrong way. There were story tellers in ancient times where stories are on creatures of mythology and they were deemed the best of their time. Yes we can't compare books now with those of the great Charles dickens or those of Sherlock. You have to give the new books a chance, remember that reason when u started loving reading, mine is so I can paint a world in my head and go on journeys. Start of with the genres u love without comparing the books with those of literature perfection. Perhaps this might help u see new light :)
