Bought (last night we were) the delicious wolves yesterday. Still need to give the lyrics more attention, but not tired of it after six listens.

Thanks for the happy new year wishes. Same to you, my dear sylvan. So glad to hear that your man will be in attendance to ring in the new year. It's just not the same without one's beloved near.
1. My resolution is to ever strengthen my potential, let my spirit grow large and peaceful and follow through on my goals. (Ever hoping to beat the demon Procrastination.)
2. Stuffing and gravy, poppyseed sherry cake

My answers:
1) Yes.
2) Christmas cake (but mostly just the marzipan icing).
3) Don't know, not sure what this is.
4) I like the idea, but time and money must be directed elsewhere for the time being. I like those little mini-shark critters.
5) Don't have a particular favourite, but I'll pick "E" because it's the first letter of the name of somebody I like a lot.
6) "Probabilistically".
On another note: I loved the Juan de Fuca Trail too. I've hiked it a couple of times (it helps to live nearby). The West Coast Trail has more dramatic scenery (I think), but it's a hassle to book it, pay the fees, etc. The other nice thing about the West Coast Trail is that it tends to stay closer to the ocean, and you can hike a lot more on the beach than on the Juan de Fuca. Oh well, they're both great.
Yet another note: salmonid evolution is interesting because (among other reasons) there was a whole-genome duplication in the ancestor of the salmonids, so they have 4 copies of every chromosome, instead of 2. The two pairs are diverging, though, so in another 200 million years or so they will be diploid again, but with twice as much DNA. This is a great chance to look at how genes diverge once they duplicate, since the copies are still similar enough that we can identify them fairly confidently, and see how they're diverging. More generally, does the genetic flexibility granted by having spare copies of every gene have a significant effect? Maybe related to their sudden speciation into salmon, trout, etc? Maybe related to their ability (in some species) to thrive in both fresh and salt water? Inquiring minds want to know. It's also interesting because there is considerable evidence for at least one, and possibly two, rounds of whole-genome duplication in the human lineage, but in the more distant past (distant enough that the evidence for the duplications is controversial). Maybe we can learn more about how we got here by seeing what is happening with the salmonids. My particular task is to analyze a huge pile of RNA sequences to extract patterns of divergence since the genome duplication (as well as compare the salmon-trout gene pairs, etc).
I didn't make it to the Leading Edge conference, unfortunately. I'm administratively in computer science for peculiar reasons (maybe "peculiar" should have been the word I love to say ), so I don't always hear about stuff that's happening in biology, and when I do it's harder to justify attending. Oh well.
Well, this comment has gone on long enough, so I'll just say, "Cheers, and Happy New Year!!"
P.S. Regarding your comment about being scared of people some days... I feel the same way (except maybe I'd say "most days"...). Let me know if you find your dream job...
