So a writer over at Gawker wrote a piece today, "If you buy a Harry Potter Engagement Ring, you should not get married." Basically saying that someone who would buy--or wear--a Harry Potter engagement ring isn't mature enough to be married.
I'm neither a big fan of marriage, nor a huge fan of engagement rings, and while I like Harry Potter, I'm not one to jump on a Harry Potter -themed engagement ring, but I strongly believe that nobody, nobody, should dictate anyone else's happiness and I'm sick to death of people shaming other people for loving children's or YA books. So when my friends over at Home for Wayward Geeks offered me a chance to weigh with a response to the article, I kind of went to town.
You don't just marry the person, you marry the person's passions. And dammit, if they want a Harry Potter engagement ring and you can make it happen, you have every right to do so.
