If you have not found it yet, I want to call your
attention to "Baghdad Burning", a blog being kept by
an extremely thoughtful and literate Iraqi woman,
going by the name of "Riverbend".

<excerpt>
[Donald Rumsfeld reported] "Innocent civilians in
[Fallujah] have all the guidance they need as to how
they can avoid getting into trouble."
How do they do that Rumsfeld? While tons of explosives
are being dropped upon your neighborhood, how do you
do that? Do you stay inside the house and try to avoid
the thousands of shards of glass that shoot out at you
from shattering windows? Or do you hide under a table
and hope that it's sturdy enough to keep the ceiling
from crushing you? Or do you flee your house and pray
to God you don't come face to face with an Apache or
tank or that you aren't in the line of fire of a
sniper? How do you avoid the cluster bombs and all the
other horror being dealt out to the people of
Falloojeh?
</excerpt>
I find this simple account with its obvious questions
moving to the depths in a way I can hardly articulate.
I remember the despair that I try to forget.
I feel despair for the lack of empathy shown by so
many of our countrymen for the people of Iraq. When I
read about this woman's experience I want to scream at
the top of my lungs till my vocal chords burst. I want
to grab every Bush supporter I can find
http://www.werenotsorry.com
and somehow force them to hear this perspective. I
want to fall to my knees and beg them to open their
hearts and their eyes to the reality of what is
occurring to real human beings over there, because of
this monsterous occupation.
I want to claw open their eyes and force them to love,
to tear down the walls of ignorance in myself and in
everyone, and spend myself completely in a wild and
futile frenzy until my exhausted heart can feel no
more and nothing remains but sleep.
