As the first month in SF rolled on, we started to explore. We had to stop eating out, which had become regular fare in Denver. Whole Foods was nearby. So was Trader Joe's - a new market delicacy to us with our gluten-free diet. Trying to manage a gluten-free diet through Whole Foods in SF without a job put me quickly on the welfare path.

SF is not the place to live on no money. Hell, even in a decent job I can't afford to move back if I wanted to. My BF and I were forced to move to Oakland while in school. And Oakland is rapidly going up in price. Google and Twitter, and Facebook have pushed the prices up in the Bay Area. There are just almost no options, even if you want to live in a house renting rooms from strangers, you'll still be paying about a grand a month. If you thought the tenderloin was shady, I don't actually recommend living in most places in Oakland, though there are a few better neighborhoods. If you are really looking for places to afford you kind of have to move to the East Bay or the South Bay. Berkeley is quite a lovely place to live in. It has a culture all it's own and a lot of artists. If you can find a place, I'd try there, you can always bus or BART into the city. I moved to Alameda, which was affordable and safe, but if you don't have a car, you can kiss late night's out goodbye. Good luck finding a place!
