Surviving the Outbreak Part 2: Essential Weaponary
Ok today we are going to learn about the weaponary that you will need to have available to make sure you don't join the ranks flesh eating "stenchers."
The first and most important rule you need to remember is that blades and blunt instruments don't need to be relaoded! While a nice 12 gauge shotgun would be a beautiful thing to have, once the ammunition is gone it makes a very poor crudgel. While i do advocate having and maintaining firearms, it's always good to have a back up plan for when the ammo runs out. Now while it is true that anything can be used as a weapon, as seen in popular video games such as: "Dead Rising" and "Condemed." There are a few key things to keep in mind when selecting you secondary weapon of choice. One thing you want to keep in mind is the reach of the weapon. Because as we all should know is that on of the ways to become infected is to be bitten. So you want something that you can bash the hell out of the zombie with, without getting in to close. Another thing you want to keep in mind is durability. There is nothing worse than running into a group of the undead and having your weapon break on the first zombie. Now as to the blade versus blunt object debate, that is a choice that i leave uo to you. It really depends on the type of wounds you want to inflict. Something else that you want to keep in mind is weight. You don't want a weapon so light that it takes a million hits to inflict any type of real damage, also you don't want a weapon so heavy that its an effort just to swing it. A few secondary weapons that I can recommend are as follows: a baseball bat, or a cricket bat for our British friends, a fire axe, a heavy duty pipe, or any cheap battle ready sword, available from any number of replica catalogs.
Ok, now were going to go into fire arms. First of all were going to go into a few do's and do not's that might want to consider while chooing your firearm's. While an automatic weapon might sound nice at first, one thing that you want to consider is the shere amount of ammo that your going to go through. Because in this post-apocalyptic world the convience of going shopping for your ammo is nil. So conservation is going to be key. Another firearm type that you might want to stay away from is high caliber single-shot rifles. While these guns are good for those distance shots, you once agan run into a proble when confronted with a group of zombies in close proximity. Now this problem can be remedied with a good side arm. Another firearm that you want to stay away from is the six shot revolver, the problem with this being the same as with the single shot rifle. Now something else you may be tempted to do when scavenging is to pick up as many firearms as you can manage to carry off. This is a big no-no. You want to keep your firearms to a minimum, and stock up on the ammo to go with those. I recommend having three firearms: a 12 gauge shotgun, a 9mm pistol, and a semi-automatic rifle. You want the shotgun because of the shere stopping power and it comes in very handy in close quaters. The 9mm you want because they are work horses and will fire under just about any condition. The semi-automatic you want for those distance shots.
Ok that is about it for the weaponary you will need to survive. In the next blog we will go into a good place to hole up and how to make the proper fortifications to make it livable.
