When I was a little girl (about 3ish, the memory feels nearly like a dream), on warm, simple summer days I would take walks to the music store, to the corner store with my Daddy. For some reason, I particularly remember one warm windy summer day I think I wore a lace trim white dress. The wind was aggressive, but warm, so still inviting. At the corner store that day, I spotted a plastic imitation barbie doll (not rubber, therefore not nearly as durable). He saw the sparkle in my eyes, and bought her for me, along with my usual candy necklace. On the walk home, the wind loved her more than I did that day and took her head right off of her body. Such a pity. But I still wore my candy necklace. The yellow rings lasted until nightfall.
Yesterday I turned 25. My dad came to visit me, shared green dreams with me, told me things I had already assumed about my approaching future. We laughed. I introduced him to death metal. I told him about all the people I've shared with you. He listened. I think one of his only responses was "Aint that a bitch".
Upon his departure he told me he had something in his car for me, and that he'd pull up in front of my door to give it to me. I agreed. I waited while he sped around the corner , stopping right in front of the corner by the alley one house away from mine. I opened the car door hurriedly in the cold evening wind and looked at him. He reached in the glove compartment and handed me a candy necklace in plastic wrapping. Yep. I squealed and the most genuine laugh I'd had all day rolled out of me. We exchanged 'I love you's' and I ran back inside. I guess some things we both will never forget.
My pops is the shit!
