Here's an interesting St. Patrick's Day fact. Saint Patrick was not Irish.
It's true. He was actually an English born Roman citizen named Patricius. One of my dead relatives (a guy known as Niall Of The Nine Hostages) captured Patricius on a raid of England, and took him back to Ireland as a hostage (at the time, it was a standard practice to do that, and use the ransom collected to pay your soldiers and whatnot).
Glossing over the details, the ransom wasn't paid, he escaped to France years later, and chose to come back to Ireland after becoming a priest. The rest is pretty well known. There's more trivia, of course, but I'll spare you the details. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
