When you have a pet, you have a companion, someone you love almost like your own children (and for some people, they are their children). Part of being a responsible pet owner is knowing that you may have to make a decision that no parent should ever have to make for their flesh and blood children: when to put them to sleep if their quality of life has deteriorated to the point that they are no longer enjoying being alive. If they have, and you keep them alive, you are being selfish since you don't want to say goodbye. But, while this is an extremely difficult decision, when it comes to that point, it should be one you can make.
It is with great sadness that I say that my parents' dog George had to be let go this morning. They had taken him in as a rescue when my ex-wife found him in the middle of the street. A beagle/dachshund mix, George was already 13 when he came to live with my parents. He quickly became a huge part of their life and daily routine. On Saturday, he suffered his 2nd stroke in a month, and when he came home from the vet it was obvious that he was suffering and that he was no longer the same George that he was when he went to sleep Friday night. He was, as the saying goes, a good boy and he shall be sorely missed.
