At least you live in an actual city that's worthy of big things like remodeling. I live in a dinky little town that likes to think it's big...and it's latest waste of taxpayers' money is a ritzy art museum. 
I think most "real" people here could care less about an art museum. Fixing the tons of potholes and renovating some of these many abandoned old buildings rather than just letting them set there until they're delapitated (sp?)...now that might be of more importance to the average person here.
