Ten years ago today the plane of the president of Rwanda, Juvenal Habyarimana (a Hutu) was shot down while flying above the Kigali airport. It has not been established who committed the assassination. But it sparked a mass genocide of tutsis and moderate hutus. 800,000 people in 100 days. A tenth of the population dead. Many of the women managed to escape the murder were raped, and are now dying slowly of aids. The international community failed to act, as the current UN secretary general Kofi Annan (then head of UN peacekeeping forces) has recently lamented, The international community is guilty of sins of omission. The international community failed Rwanda and that must leave us always with a bitter sinse of regret. I mention it today, not to depress you, sicken you, make you feel somehow guilty or obscene, but rather to make you aware. I also hope that it will make us all reflect on the state of humanity in our world today and how it reflects on our actions.
