This is about Basha's, a local supermarket chain in Arizona.
I am extremely upset...pissed off actually. Today on my way home I went to the Basha's on 7th ave and Osborn. As I usually do on my way home since my local Safeway is closed for repairs. I walked in to the store and was greeted by one of the girls who is usually there and I said hi back. I then went about getting some juice and water which is all on the same aisle. While getting my juice one of the cashiers approaches me and asks for my backpack. I asked why and she said it was store policy. I have walked through this store with my backpack many times before and have never been told this. Reluctantly I gave it to her because inside it were my house keys, some of my computer equipment and two very expensive textbooks for college. She proceeded to bring my bag to the front of the store and they opened and unzipped it to look inside of it. Mind you I was in the store maybe two minutes. When I shop I know what I want, I grab it, I leave.
So I checked out and noticed my bag wasn't even behind the customer service desk. They left it sitting out on the floor in front of the service desk where anyone could have grabbed it. When I left I checked the front of the store for a sign stating that backpacks were not allowed and lo and behold there is no sign.
I wonder....if a woman walks in the store with a large purse do they approach that woman and ask to take her purse from her to leave at the customer service desk? Because I believe I spied quite a few duffel sized purses in the store while I was leaving.
However if a man in his mid 30's walks into their store with tattoos and piercings (I will get to that) and has a backpack on his back and he is by himself apparently it is ok to ask that individual whom is carrying a large quantity of expense within that backpack to leave it at the front of the store and open it without his permission.
There have been occasions where the cashiers have shuddered at me while I have been checking out and they look at my ears. There have been incidents where the baggers look at me and start asking me questions aloud about "Why would you do that to your head?" "You're crazy" and other shit...I mean seriously isn't that a bit overboard and completely unprofessional. What if I had a large growth or a birth mark that was unusual...would the store let that fly?
I want to know what you think? Because I feel as if this is wrong if it is not posted and I also feel if they are going to discriminate against students wearing backpacks which are unaccessible on your back then they should also discriminate against duffel bag purses and be equal in their judgment.
Also does this seem to be because of the backpack or because of the person wearing the backpack?
Because in all honesty I felt humiliated and insulted...isn't that the feeling people get when they are being discriminated against? As if for some reason we are not as good as you because there is something different about us?
