I think this will help:
Unplug the AE (from the power), and then plug it in to the modem (Via Ethernet).
Now, get a small tipped pen/pencil or pin and go to the back of your modem (I think it is an arris modem). There should be a tiny "Reset" button on the back of the modem.
Hit the reset button and wait till you get US, DS, Link and Online all going. If Online is not on, and US and DS are blinking, hit the STANDBY button, that should fix things.
Then plug your AE in...

What kind of IP are you getting when you are directly plugged in?
Edit: Remember that since that phone system has a battery back-up, whenever you switch from something to something else, you have to reset that shit!
