Okay so that was gross and let's move on.
Made soup last night. Let me state up front that my soups often require the use of a fork to consume, especially the next day's leftovers.
My goal was something along the lines of Panera's creamy chicken whatever with the wild rice, because I had a box of wild rice and it was mocking me. So. I started the wild rice, which takes about 45 minutes to simmer--one up rice, two cups water, some salt. While that was going on, I also boiled four or five 'tenderloins' (seriously chicken loins don't look like that, I've checked) for 20 minutes and then shredded them with a fork and dumped them back in the water on medium heat. To this, I added two dooks of sherry (as in the "dook dook dook" when you pour) and four cups of milk. I did this is a crockpot-size saucepan because I was planning on a lot of soup.
Also into the mix, I threw a handful of grated cheddar because fuck yeah (soup was on medium-high at this point to melt the cheese). I also microwaved three strips of bacon. I get the peppered bacon--each slice is like a foot and a half thick, and it is fucking covered in pepper. It's what bacon evolves into after making love to a woman for the first time. (After it kills a man in single combat, it evolves again into pancetta.) Once the bacon cooled, I broke it into chunks--peppered bacon does not "crumble"--and set it aside. I wanted it to be pretty crispy for the first bowl.
Let's see... I cut up some celery and carrots, and added about 3/4 cup of flour to what was probably around 8 total cups of liquid. I also added half a cup of white rice, and a diced potato, for added bulk. For flavor, I added a healthy amount of dill, a goodly amount of sage and thyme, a few pinches of rosemary, and a lot of black pepper and salt.
Then I let it simmer for at least an hour. Ten minutes before serving, I added the wild rice, and two minutes before serving I added the bacon.
The result: some good shit. Luckily the temperature dropped a little last night, because this is really more of a cold-winter-night soup--really filling, makes you sleepy.
Anyway. Just wanted to clarify that I am not only eating ice cream sandwiches and hot pockets. Just, y'know. Mostly only.
