I had to save one of my rats' lives today!
I was cleaning all of the cages so I needed him to come out of his orange juice carton nesting box. You know the ones that look like cartons but have the screw off tops? Instead of coming out of the big cutout bottom, he decided to be a cheeky rat and run the other way. He got more than he bargained for and when he shoved his head through the plastic opening. He crammed himself in so bad that he looked like a Sharpei with all of his skin up around his head. Remember the cartoon where Winnie the Pooh gets stuck in rabbits hole because he ate too much? Well it was like that, except just his head.
Anyway I had to cut him out of it and I was scared shitless. I couldn't even tell how badly it was impeding his breathing. Somehow I managed to cut open the box then very delicately snip the plastic ring without cutting him or breaking his neck. Luckily he was very cooperative. He didn't struggle at all. Rats usually know if you're helping them and they're very good about letting you. Once he was free I started checking him over and he practically leapt into my arms. My poor baby. It ended up being a huge bonding experience. We haven't had him long at all so he's still been pretty shy, but he's now he's acting like he trusts me more. Oh my poor thing. Rats are funny little creatures. I'm so glad he's okay! We just lost another one not long ago, I would have freaked if he had been strangled.
This has just been the cherry on top of a really weird fucking day. Jesus.

When my boys get lonely, they curl up next to me and fall asleep while I scratched them. Rats know who love 'em.
