I had never heard of Gwen Guthrie before I stumbled across this video on YouTube. I was looking for covers of "(They Long To Be) Close To You," a Burt Bacharach tune made famous by The Carpenters. I found this wonderful, seemingly forgotten gem, an R&B-style interpretation of the classic hit. I have since heard that this is Mr. Bacharach's favorite version of the song.
I really like this lady's voice. Sadly, she died of uterine cancer in 1999.

Another recent discovery on YouTube (where I have been spending time lately looking for songs I like) is this bizarre, amazing video. The Penny Magic Show, fronted by Penny Pearce, appears on a Santa Monica, CA public access TV show in the '80s, singing a song called "The Shrink." Most people refer to it by its most memorable line: "Why Do You Think You Are Nuts?"
