I've had this feeling lately that my appreciation for delicacy and subtlety in movies, books, and music has been spolied by exposure to the more blaring qualities of mainstream media. As an example- I watched Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries earlier this week. While I could appreciate the storytelling and pacing, I couldn't help but be bored by it at times. It's like my brain is wired to expect fast-paced visual transitions, plot twists, and passionate dialogue. I had a similar experience with Herzog- I could recognize the beauty of the writing, but couldn't keep myself interested regardless. Sort of frustrating really.
Also. I went grocery shopping today and while walking by the meat counter I noticed two packages containing slabs of what looked like dingy, gray sliced ham. I don't know why they caught my attention (maybe the fact that they appeared to far past any sort expiration date), but when I looked more closely at them, I noticed that they were labeled "Meat". That was it, no indication of what the "Meat's" source was. They were slabs of slimy, gray mystery meat. I almost bought a package just to be able show people what I discovered at Stop and Shop. I'm really tempted to go back with a camera to preserve the image for posterity. For some reason I find discoveries like this endlessly amusing.

I like the funny fast food chains that label some burgers as meat supliment or 'meat' and not beef.
