Something I Learned Today
Deadheads and/or hippies in general have no sense of humor and are vindictive, whiny assholes.
On the radio show the other day I decided to intro the show by playing a couple of songs making fun of the shit that was being played on the show immediately prior to the one I am covering. Their show is two hours of Grateful Dead, which I would think is enough to permanently damage anyone's brain. When I got to the station I was told that they had just put on a twelve minute song (what the fuck? 12 minutes? Unless you happen to be Beethoven or Mozart, you really should NOT be writing songs of that length) and that it was all in my hands. I waited for that song to end and then did the station ID, show introduction, and a PSA. I then said I wanted to "clear the auditory palate" and put on a song that a few people here might be familiar with, a song by a band called The Templars. That song is called The 60s Are Over and contains lyrics about people obsessed with hippie culture and bands like The Grateful Dead. There is a line that says something like "how much longer before they O.D. and we see them dead". After that I said "I feel a little better, but I can't quite get that hippie stuff out of my head, let's try again" and played a song by The Anti-Heros called Jerry Was A Piece Of Shit, hopefully you can all imagine what that one is about. After that ended, I said "Ahh, I feel better, don't you? Probably not, but here we go anyway" and then launched into the rest of the show. I didn't get any angry calls, or any calls on the topic of those songs or Deadheads at all, but apparently I pissed a bunch of hippies off enough that they called the station manager sometime during the week and he sent my friend an email about it. Here's the email (the only thing changed is a name) :
dude, who is your friend? PLEASE tell them not to do that if they fucking do that this week i will have no choice but to take your show away i had a slew of phone calls and the last thing i want is some grateful dead fan who gives this station money giving me an earful of shit. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if your friend does that this week i am coming up here and taking he or she off the fucking air i don't give a fuck if they like the grateful dead or not i'm not the biggest fan myself but bashing a show we air on this station right before your show is not cool so if your friend can't do the show and keep his or her fucking comments to herself he or she will have to be removed which in turn means you will have to be removed. sorry dude, i don't mean to get pissed at you but what happened WAS NOT COOL and the people that feel the wrath of our listeners (people who donate money to KDUR and happen to like the dead) are myself and Dxxx.
I feel bad for my friend, as I didn't mean to bring any heat down on him (or the station managers, for that matter), but it's just a tiny bit ridiculous that hippies can't laugh at themselves, at least that's the way I see it. Oh well, guess I'll just have to be sure not to hurt anybody's feelings tomorrow night.
That's right, I'm on again tomorrow. How could any of you NOT listen after hearing that story? Go to http://www.kdur.org/ from 10 p.m. until Midnight Mountain Time. For those outside of this time zone (that's most of you) I'll be nice and translate the time for you. West Coast folks can hear me from 9 until 11, Central would be 11 until 1, and back East it's Midnight until 2. I'm playing everything from straight up 50s Rock 'N Roll to freshly pressed Punk Rock, from Psychobilly and Rockabilly to 80s Hard Core, basically if it rates as good music in my book, I'll play it. I LOVE getting calls from people all over the place, so please feel free to call in as soon as I start announcing the station phone number.
