Here are my thoughts on the new Transformers movie. It will be hastily written because I have to go to work soon.
As soon as Transformers started, I thought my worst fears had come true: Soundwave was in the movie. In the old cartoon, Soundwave was a badass Decepticon, but how could one put a cassette player into a modern film? My friends and I had figured that if he was indeed in the film, Soundwave would be an iPod. If that were to happen, then the movie would instantly jump the shark. Anyway, in one of the first scenes of the film, one of the soldiers has an iPod. I thought all my worst fears had been realized. However, that was the only shot of the iPod and Soundwave never showed up. As for the rest of the film, I would say it did the old cartoon damn good justice. The writers kept the bulk of the audience in mind (oldschool fans) when writing and realized that we would be older and we'd appreciate some good humor, so that was definitely there. Some heavy innuendo really got some laughs out of me. There wasn't a huge stable of Autobots and Decepticons in the film, but the ones that were there were damn good choices. The original Optimus Prime voice actor came back for his role, but sadly, Frank Welker didn't come back for Megatron. Hugo Weaving took over that role, however, and he did a good job with it. Megatron was fucking badass. Shia LeBeouf was excellent, as well. I've never really seen any of the movies he's been in because I assumed that since he was a Disney actor and I'm an ignorant prick. He's well on his way to becoming another Tom Hanks, though. He was very snappy with his lines and had a cynical way of saying everything that made me love him. The soundtrack, too, wasn't too shabby. The orchestral score was amazing and the songs were pretty good, featuring bands like Linkin Park and Taking Back Sunday. I definitely recommend this movie to fans of the show, but for anyone else, it might seem kind of lame to anyone except kids. The ending sets it up for a sequel, and I've read that there will be two more films made. Here's hoping that they don't suck. Overall, I give Transformers an eight out of ten.
