So immediately after seeing the video of the girl from the Miss Teen USA pageant who represented South Carolina:
I thought of that scene in Billy Madison where he is engaged in the "Jeopardy" section of his Academic Decathlon against with Eric, who as everyone who has seen the movie is a huge dick. The category is "Reflections on Society and Literature". Well, Billy finishes up his answer comparing the industrial revolution to a story about the little puppy who lost his way. The moderator then answers back:
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
Well, I kind of wish Mario Lopez had said that to her after she summed up her point. I don't know much about beauty pageants, but this girl still finished 3rd runner up. Either someone was asked a question about business ethics and flipped out and took Lopez hostage, or the interview segment of the competition really isn't that important.
I don't know what point I am trying to even make. Okay, well firstly I came down to SC to finish my college degree. While yes, I probably did make the assumption prior to coming here that everyone was that stupid, I can assure you they are not.
Seriously, I've done my share of trashing the Palmetto state on a daily basis, but that is not the case here. I am hoping that girl just was nervous and blanked. I would have said something like, "I cannot quantify the ignorance of other people." Or blamed it on people watching too much MTV. I don't even know what point that girl was trying to make. So it is really hard to defend her which I guess I am trying to do. It is much easier to just go, "Hey. She is a moron."
Maybe I just want to raise awareness that this should not be the initial reaction to South Carolina's educational opportunities:
Ugh... maybe just better policies towards education than No Child Left Behind would just solve the percentage of people who couldn't place the US on a map. To me is just an unforgivable thing.
