Consumerism (not to be confused with materialism, which is a love of material things), has more or less taken control of our day-to-day lives here in the UK and it has become a global phenomenon, in no small part due to globalisation.
I see a link between global corporacy and climate change. The more we consume, the more we need, it’s a destructive cycle.
So why do we do it if it’s bad for us? Because we’re addicted.
Why do we love something intensely for a while then throw it out as soon as it gets damaged? Why do we replace things we can fix? Because it’s just easier.
Why can’t we then, instead of this, make it advantageous to recycle (for instance), not only advantageous, but easy?
Can you imagine a world where people drive electric cars and it’s the rule rather than exception? It’s difficult, but I’m sure you can manage.
I’m sure there are the mechanics of the situation making it difficult to do this, I’m sure the thought has already crossed the minds of those who have the power to do this.
But all the same, it’s not impossible, it’s inconvenient until we don’t have a choice (then it becomes a priority all of a sudden).
All I’m suggesting is we start to figure out a solution sooner rather than later.
