The moments I love most in life are when I am in a situation that sends that surging chill through my body. This happened today while I was on a 6 hour drive back to school. I was listening to Jared Leto pound the lyrics to Kings and Queens when it happened. First, my scalp started to constrict which resulted in the skin on my face pulling tighter. Thousands of piloerectile units in my subcutaneous tissue were activated simultaneosly like in a symphony. My heartbeat quickened and endorphins showered my brain making the event slow allowing my prefrontal cortex more time to assess what was happening. Epinephrine surged through my bloodstream making my muscles grip the steering wheel harder. My breathing quickened and got deeper like I had been shocked and was holding my breath. My pupiils both dilated making my view of the road momentarily loose focus. Finally, a wave shot through all my muscles that made them ripple against the car seat.
These moments do not happen very often. In fact, most people go days to months without feeling it. Joy or sorrow or anything in between can cause it but it ultimately is up to a person's individual excitements that determines when it occurs. We are often to caught up in our mundane lives to search for ways to experience this thrill or even remember it. But when it overtakes you, life cannot get any sweeter. This is the feeling of freedom and the true meaning of living. I need to go in search of it more often.
