"Gris stares at the fire while she listens to Josephus call out instructions to Melissa on the hill. “It’s too far gone. She shouldn’t have put her hands on me, I lashed out. I did what I did.”
"Garrett scoffs, “Bullshit. You’re scared shitless of that girl, that’s on you, nothings too far gone yet.”
"Gris dares to speak above a whisper as she spits angry words at Garrett. “What do you know of it?”
"Garrett smiles bitterly, “I know everything about it. I live there with every breath I take. Too far gone is when the one you love is dead. Too far gone is when you’ve failed them and given up on their memory. Too far gone is betraying your faith and your better nature. Too far gone is surviving at all cost when you didn’t earn that right. Trust me, you aren’t too far gone. Mere words and an act of kindness can undo all your present woes and you owe it to the girl and yourself to use those words and make those acts of contrition and if she rebukes you, as painful as that might seem, at least you tried. That’s a battle lost but the war won in the conflict of too far gone.”
