Thoughts on Odysseus (or Penelope, the first Army Wife)
The more I look back to the stories of Odysseus, the more I cant help but to wonder what his wife Penelope in Ithaca must have felt.
Or any of the women really.
Penelope was left with Antcleia and Eurycleia in Ithaca, to have Telemachus without Odysseus.
For twenty years she avoids suitors, raises Telemachus, and just waits in hopes of hearing word of her husbands return. As he galavants to fight a war over the stolen Helen.
When Odysseus returns, dressed as a beggar, he kills all of Penelopes suitors, with the help of their son. He even kills Amphinomus, whom Penelope might have even loved, considering he was there for the 20 years Odysseus was gone. And one of the few suitors who loved Penelope more than his love of wanting to rule Ithaca.
Who was Odysseus to kill these suitors so horribly?
What a terrible double standard he carries. When he himself had lived with Circe (whom I love) for a year in her bed. His men had to remind him of his own damn home land, wife and child.
He was captured by Calypso for many years but also shared her bed in this time?
To make matters worse, after the War of Troy is over. Odysseus travels again. This time he goes to Thesprotia and not only beds with Callidice (who is the Queen), but he marries her. And lives on Thesprotia with her for many years, until she dies, in fact. Then leaves back to Ithaca, leaving the son he had with Callidice to rule Thesprotia.
And who is waiting for him still in Ithaca, you guessed it.
Sorry, as a woman fuck that guy.
